Choosing the right fabric for your bed linens can be challenging, especially given the multitude of options and the wealth of (at times conflicting) information which is readily available. To assist you in making the right choices, and to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep, we have put together a series of informative blog posts on the subject.

In each post we will be highlighting the technicalities and qualities of each of the fabrics from which your ECRU bespoke luxury bed linens can be created. You can also subscribe to our newsletter to receive guidance, as well as news of limited edition fabrics and exclusive events, directly to your mailbox by sending an email to admin@ecrulinen.com.

What is linen?

Linen is a fabric made from fibres derived from the flax plant, or from the flax plant stems to be precise. Flax plants only grow in limited places globally. The best linen is woven from yarns which have been spun from the fibres of flax plants from Western Europe. Our linen originates from Normandy, known for producing the highest quality flax fibres in the world. All of our linen holds the “Masters of Linen Certification” which guarantees that the fabric is made from 100% high quality European flax, entirely grown and processed in Europe.

Interesting fact: Ecru (our company name) is the name given to the light fawn colour of unbleached linen.

A worthwhile investment

Flax fibres are known for their strength which translates into a highly durable fabric. With appropriate care linen bed sheets can last for many years despite regular usage. What is more, linen gets softer after each wash as the natural fibres slowly break down over time. There is no need to worry about how to care for your bedding as all our bed sheets and accessories are packaged with a care guide to ensure that you will continue to enjoy them for years to come. Linen sheets are the perfect long-term investment.

Versatility above all else

Linen is highly breathable as the natural fibres allow air to circulate, providing comfort during the night. It has excellent moisture-wicking properties which means it can absorb and release moisture, helping to keep you dry throughout your sleep. This is perfect for the warmer months and for those who are considered “hot sleepers”.

Linen is also known for its natural temperature-regulating capabilities. The fabric adapts to the temperature of your body, keeping you cocooned in the cooler seasons, and dry and fresh when the temperature increases. So, despite the misconception that linen is just for the summer, it is actually ideal for use all-year round.

In addition, linen is hypo-allergenic so it is the best choice for people with allergies or sensitive skin.
